Session Topics:
Our Past and Our Attitudes: God wants us to become more aware of the role we play in forming the habits and attitudes which so fundamentally affect our lives. What we sow in our self-talk, in our thoughts and in our feelings is what were going to reap. Were called to repent, which means to change our minds, and to have the attitude of Christ. Our Prayer: Our Lord wants us to continually progress in our prayer life, so that we can learn the value and the joy of praying for the Fathers will instead of for our own will in all the circumstances of our lives. We are to progress in our ability to pray as Jesus taught us to pray in the Our Father. Our Pain and Our Suffering: God desires for us to continue to grow in order to be able to see His divine plan and the foundation for our obedience and sanctification in the pain as well as in the joy of our lives. We all need to find a reason and meaning for the pain in our world, personally and collectively, and to discover that all of our adversities in life can have an eternal value for us. Its in our suffering that we learn obedience just as our Lord Jesus did. Our Humility and Obedience: It is very important for us to know and to believe that humility is the mother of all virtue, since we cannot even have the proper faith, hope or charity without humility. And the first fruit of humility is obedience-- a word that is not much in favor in our culture. In order for us to continue developing these virtues, our pride and arrogance must experience a lifelong death process. Our Love: It is really not possible for us to embrace the spirituality of our Lord without a growing understanding of His unconditional (agape) love. But once we begin to develop a firmer grasp of this love and commit our lives to it, then our walking in His footsteps becomes an exciting challenge and a thrilling adventure for us and for all those people God places in our path. Our Nonviolence: Our Lord calls all baptized Christians to His way of conflict resolution. Our nonviolent response forces the violent aggressor to face the true nature of his or her action. Only then can real repentance and healing occur. We need only to reflect on the crucifix to witness how the ultimate violence was handled by our Master. Our Simplicity and Detachment: In order for us to become more attached to our Lord and to be able to walk in His footsteps more often than not, we need to become more detached from this world and embrace a simplicity of life. As the 1.2 billion Christians of the world, representing 20% of our planet, begin to more readily accept this reality, then more of our brothers and sisters of our one Father will be able to have their basic human needs met. Our Mercy and Forgiveness: We need to continually discover that in our extending mercy, compassion and forgiveness to others, we are the first ones to benefit. We also must be more aware of the fact that these gifts are exercised by us when: we believe that were in the right and they're in the wrong; they don't really deserve these gifts; and we don't feel like living these mandates of our Lord. We also need to recognize that these gifts flow not so much from our feelings as from an exercise of our will. Our Cross:Our Lord calls all of us as His disciples to take up our cross daily and to walk in His footsteps. Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we can get to heaven. We are joint heirs with Christ if only we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him. Jesus came to transform our own crosses in life into events of eternal redemptive value. Our Fear: Scripture advises us continually to not be afraid, yet fear cripples many of us in our endeavors to live lives filled with the peace and joy promised to us by our Lord. Jesus came as the solution to our pain, suffering and death--the very causes of most of our fears. We need to nurture the attitude of Christ within us in order to more joyfully follow Him. Our Living the Sacraments: Were invited to more actively understand, embrace and live the sacraments instead of just passively receiving them. Our Baptism and Confirmation send us forth, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to bring the good news of Our Lord to the world. Reconciliation and the Eucharist further empower us to be Jesus in our secular environment. Our lives will be transformed with the growing realization of how were called to live unconditional love and chastity within matrimony and life in general. Our Community: Our Lord revealed to us in many ways that we can be healed individually and collectively from our brokenness. It is in community that we have the opportunity to more fully die to ourselves, because were invited to love people just as they are and not as we would want them to be. The needs of our fellow community members, mentally, emotionally, financially and spiritually, must become as important to us as our own needs and those of our family. Our Perfection: Scripture and the teachings of the Church make it quite clear that we are all called to perfection in our lives--which means wholeness--which means that we are not to place any limitations on our love. And we can all choose to do that!! Now, of course, we will fail many times because of sin in our lives. But with the power of the Holy Spirit through grace in our souls, we can begin to really discover how poor we are in the eyes of God and how we can rise from that awakening into the wealth of His kingdom. Our Peace and Joy: Most people including Christians don't really believe that living the spirituality of our Lord is good news--its good news that He died for us but not to do Him. If were not living His way, were experiencing some of hell right here on earth. Its easier being yoked to Jesus than to the world--still a challenge, of course, but much easier when walking in step and yoked with Him. And its in this way of living, that we can continue to thrill in the peace and joy that He promises us here and in all of eternal life. Our Sin: The sin of the century is mans loss of his sense of sin. In Genesis, we discover the devastation brought about in Gods creation because of mans sin. We need to be as aware of our sinfulness as we are of Gods grace and mercy. We are invited to learn more about how we began our life in sin so as to understand our present day problems and challenges. Our Motivation: Jesus asked a very interesting question on the road to Caesarea Philippi when He asked the disciples who the people said He was. He asked another interesting question when he asked why do we call Him Lord, Lord and not do what He says. Motivation is a key to unraveling our daily walk with the Lord. What is it that truly causes us to do the things we do? Or more correctly stated, who is it? Our Control: Thy will be done. This was the constant prayer of Jesus. Yet as we live our daily lives we fall so short in living this example of Jesus. We need to recognize that it is Gods will that is to be done and not mans will. The frustrations and anxieties of life are linked to this major problem. To live a life of joy calls for surrender and death to self will. Our Decisions: The beginning process of this walk with Jesus starts with a decision...the decision to enter into the journey of the narrow path. Jesus calls us constantly for a renewal of our minds. He wants us to decide, just as the rich young ruler, to come after Him... to deny ourselves and to follow Him daily. Without understanding the process involved in this decision, many people tend to deny the truth and to walk away from the true road to Jesus and to His Kingdom. Our Evangelization: As lay people, we have been called through
our Baptism and Confirmation to renew the temporal order. The Church needs
all of us and all of our gifts. We are invited to be witnesses to the
Truth. The key here is not just the proclamation of the Truth by word but
more importantly by deed--by our example. How do we as lay people
incorporate the teachings of Jesus given to us on the Mount into our
everyday lives? This has a great deal to do with our authenticity and
credibility as Christians. |
